Court by Design

I have a very talented sister-in-law. Her name is Courtenay. She is clever and crafty in ways that completely blow the mind of un-crafty folk like me. She makes cushions, aprons, vertical garden beds and refurbishes furniture. (Keep an eye out in the rest of this post for said cushions and aprons, and also a particularly cool rocking chair.) She blogs at http://courtbydesign.tumblr.com/, go there, check out her skills, be impressed.

Talented sister-in-law and I share two adorable nieces, named Cadence and Allegra. They’re ridiculously cute, so cute that I wish they were like tea cup pigs and never got bigger, but they are getting bigger, fast (I don’t really wish that, I can’t wait to know grown-up Cadence and Allegra – they’re going to make brilliant big people).

If you add together crazily talented sister-in-law, and unfairly cute nieces, the following occurs.

Godson

In this blog I’d like to get my biases out of the way early. The following photo is of my Godson. I think we can also agree, however, that it is also a photo of one of the cutest little babies around.

Told you.

Need more proof?

Now that we’re agreed, I’d like to introduce Hunter Harry Stevens. Hunter’s parents, Kelli and Jamie, are Brad’s friends from way back before I came on the scene. Brad and Jamie were both in each others weddings and have a Bromantic relationship of epic proportions, so Brad was a shoe-in for the role of Godfather (Brad’s also part Italian, and despite not looking much like Marlon Brando I think that helped him snag the gig). I was, of course, happy and honoured to come along on the Godparent ride, and Brad and I were officially named so at Hunter’s dedication held at 9am New Years Day. It was a wonderful way to start the new year, even though we may have been just a little hung over for the service.

Also, and just as a side note, at the time of the above photo Hunter was four and a half months old, and when I took the photo below he was just less than a month old.

In summary, the kid got big fast. Do all children grow up that quickly?

Renee’s 30th bash

When I first got to Melbourne I sent a strange and bumbling email to a woman named Renee (who at the time was half of the Inspired Occasion, a Melbourne based party planning power duo, which is now a Melbourne based party planning power solo in the hands of the exceptionally creative, wonderful and master of seemingly all things chef-ery, Alex). The email was a bit awkward and a lot apologetic, but essentially went along the lines of, ‘I’m new here, I’d like to take photos at Kid’s birthday parties… help?’ Renee replied by asking if I’d come along and take photos at Olivia’s party that Sunday, and since then has been a constant supporter of my work and promoted me to anyone that would listen. A month ago she hired me to photograph her own birthday party (which was amazing) and has booked me in for her daughter’s birthday in February, which I can’t wait for.

I wont post many photos from the party, but I felt compelled to share a couple of the photos of the set up, simply because of how amazing it is.

If you’d like to see more you can check out this post on Renee’s own blog or this feature of the party on Amy Atlas.

There are a lot of links already in this post, but just in case it isn’t enough, here’s some more! These are the vendors involved in Renee’s gorgeous party:

Flowers: Velvet Lily
Cake, cake pops, cupcakes and macarons: The Inspired Occasion
Oversized Balloons – Little Sooti
Styling and event coordination: Renee Bugg
Tassel garland inspiration: The Purple Pug

I love The Inspired Occasion, I never knew who the creative team behind it was though. Guess I’ll have to follow Renee’s new venture now too, what a gorgeous set up!

Love the photos Gen, you can do no wrong.

Eva’s Christening | Melbourne Family Photographer

On Sunday I was invited to take photos for a gorgeous little girl’s christening. It was the first time I’ve been to a christening, let alone photographed one, so I really had no idea what was going to happen, or what sort of faux pas I was making while I was walking around clicking away. I tried not to take photos during prayers but my brain was preoccupied thinking about camera things and quite a few times I found myself snapping away half way through a prayer, which, I’m assuming, is probably bad? Aside from my fear of accidentally offending anyone, the christening was beautiful, and it was held at St Brigid’s Catholic Church in North Fitzroy, which is a stunning building.

After the christening, the little girl’s parents put on a garden party at their home, which was really delightful, and the weather was perfect for it.

Below is baby Eva with her Aunt (left) and Mum (right), and if these two women are anything to go by Eva has creativity in her blood. Her Aunt, Cinti, is a very clever and crafty lady who runs My Poppet, an online store full of gorgeous handmade and vintage things for kids, she also made Eva’s sweet little dress. And Eva’s Mum, Janet, decorated the party and put on the desert spread, some of which is pictured below.

Prince Sahib Turns One | Melbourne based Children’s Party Photographer

A few weekends ago I had the pleasure of photographing a gorgeous little boy’s very regal first birthday party.
The party looked amazing, which was entirely expected considering it was put together by the overwhelmingly creative ladies at The Inspired Occasion, and the guests (both big and small) had a fantastic time. The charismatic guest of honour, Prince Sahib, was all smiles, and despite it being his first I suspect he caught on to the ‘birthday’ concept very quickly, and he seemed to thoroughly enjoy being spoiled for the day.
